“Scan the Skies with Faulkes Australia”

The Faulkes Telescope: Outside and

  Inside

We are seeking feedback from science teachers around NSW for interest in using the soon to be commissioned `Faulkes Telescope’. This automated, `professional sized’ 2-metre telescope is under construction at Siding Spring Observatory near Coonabarabran NSW and should be available for use in 2004.

Its primary purpose is to provide an educational facility for schools giving students unprecedented opportunity to participate in real astronomical observations of a wide range of interesting objects that they can select themselves.

Although UK funded, 15% of the available time is available for use by Australian schools.

The managing organisation for Faulkes Australia is Swinburne University in Melbourne (Director Duncan Forbes) but Macquarie University is acting as a facilitating institute in NSW

Participating schools will be able to interact directly with the telescope on-line by nominating areas of the sky to look at. Teachers can submit the necessary co-ordinates and receive images the next day via the internet. Alternatively, the images can be put on disk and mailed to the school if internet access is limited.

The “Scan the Skies” launch is planned for February 2004. If you would like to be kept up to date on this project with possible involvement for next year, please click here and print out the document.
