Silicon is a semiconductor material and is the material
used as the building block for computer chips, however
other materials, such as gallium nitride and gallium
arsenide, are also semiconductors.
To make useful devices from silicon ,or these
other semiconductors, very clean conditions are required. Extremely
small devices are made with silicon, which means that even
dust particles can interfere with their production.
To maintain a dust free production environment a special
room
called a clean room is used. This room has all the dust
filtered out by "HEPA" filters, while people working
in this environment must wear special dust free clothing.
The Clean Room Facility for Semiconductor Processing and
Device Fabrication at Macquarie University is used for
the processing of advanced semiconductor devices and is a hi-tech
tool available to the University to aid in its dual role
of research and
teaching.
