Internet Explorer 6

One of the first things that anybody needs is an Internet browser. Internet Explorer is a very large program, but it has everything you need. Visit The Microsoft home page to get more information.
Note : This is the latest version of Internet Explorer (Version 6). This version will not install on old operating systems such as Windows 95. Internet Explorer will run on one of the following operating systems : Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional.

Installation: Click here to install IE. Choose to open (or to run) the file/program. This will start the installation program. If you get a security warning at this stage, you will need to click the "Yes" button to continue with the installation. Once the installation begins, follow the installation instructions.
For Macintosh machines, click here for OS 8.1 to 9.x or click here for OS X.

Flash

Flash is an important web technology from Macromedia. It allows you to view web based animation and sounds. It has become very popular because it makes animations faster to download, even over normal modem lines. Installing this software will allow you to view websites that have been created using Flash. The Flash home page is available on the web.

Installation: Go to the Macromedia download page

Putty

Telnet is really useful, it allows you to log into another computer and control it from your computer. There are a few caveats to this, you can't just log into any computer. It needs to be running a telnet server, and this only really applies for some operating systems because you only get access to a command line (like the ms-dos prompt - not a gui like in windows). Unix/Linux is the where it is most useful. Just about everything in Unix/Linux can be done in a command line. If you want to use a Unix/Linux computer remotely - telnet is the way to go. Putty is a really nice and really simple telnet client for Windows. You can visit the Putty home page for other useful programs if you really get into it.

Installation: Click here and choose to save the file/program. Choose a spot where you want the program (your desktop would be a good place) and save it there. This program has no installation. Once you have saved it just double-click the icon to start the program.

SmartFTP

FTP stands for file transfer protocol. SmartFTP is an intuitive FTP program. It gives you a Windows Explorer style interface and it is much easier to use than the text based FTP program that comes with most versions of Windows.

Installation: Click here and choose to open (or to run) the file/program. This will start the installation program. If you get a security warning at this stage, you will need to click the "Yes" button to continue with the installation. Once the installation begins, follow the installation instructions.
