Getting Acrobat Reader to work with your web browser

If you use Netscape

When you loaded the "MATH130 Quizzes - DE1 2001" page one of the following things happened:

  1. Nothing, the page loads normally.
  2. A message which starts with "The PDFViewer is installed in your browser, but it is not enabled."
  3. A message which starts with "The PDFViewer is not installed in your browser".
  4. A message which starts with "If you are using MSIE,...".

If 1, all is ok, you don't need to do anything.

If 2, go to Preferences and choose "Navigator:Applications" from the list on the left hand side. Then scroll through the list on the right until you find "Portable Document Format". Select this and click edit. Then click the button for "Plugin". Click "OK", and all should be fine.

If 3, go to Adobe's site and download the plugin for your operating system, and follow their instructions to install it. Then follow the instructions above for 2.

If 4, things may be ok, but if not, see below.

Note: Netscape 6 does not support the Acrobat Reader properly, so your quiz will not work. The same applies to iCab.

If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer on a Windows or NT PC

When you loaded the "MATH130 Quizzes - DE1 2001" page you got a message starting with "If you are using MSIE, please check that Acrobat is configured to run inside your browser." If the quiz opens in the browser window, then probably it is ok. If not, then check that Acrobat Reader is on your computer, download it from Adobe's site if necessary and follow their installation instructions.

Open Acrobat Reader, go to "File:Preferences:General, and make sure the box for Browser Interaction is checked". This tells Acrobat that it should run inside MSIE when you download a quiz or other PDF document.

If the quiz downloads, then you get a message saying that "There is no viewer available for type of object you are trying to open." this means that you have a problem with the ActiveX plugin. This is needed to interpret the form fields which are in the quizzes (but not in ordinary PDFs like the course notes). There is some good information about this on http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/98fe.htm

If you use AOL on a Windows or NT PC

AOL does not work with Acrobat 4.x, but Acrobat 5.0 has just been released and should work. You can get it from Adobe's site, and follow the installation instructions, more information is on http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/98fe.htm.

If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer on a Mac

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 has a bug, and does not return any data, even when Acrobat appears to be installed properly. Use Nestcape instead, or update to MSIE 5.

On the Mac, MSIE and Acrobat work together the same way as Netscape and Acrobat, so the instructions are the same (except look for "Internet Options" instead of "Preferences").

If you are not sure whether your quiz results were recorded, look at the text below (or on the page after) the "End Quiz" button. After you have clicked "End Quiz", it should give you a message about your score. This message will contain your name. If it still says "Your quiz results have not been recorded", then your quiz didn't send us any data to record, so check how Acrobat is installed.

If you still have technical problems with the quizzes, email Fran Griffin, carefully describing exactly what you did and what happened.
